March 21 Port Renfrew fishing update

March 22nd, 2011

Kevin from McKenna Sport Fishing Charters had his boat out yesterday for a shakedown cruise, getting all systems go for very quickly upcoming charter season.

He got a couple of halibut in the 30s. He didn’t fish for salmon, but reported the sounder was thick with bait and what looked to be spring salmon … so it looks like the fish are out there.

Renfrew good times coming soon!

In the meantime, here’s a few videos just put together from last summer’s fishing from Hindsight:

And to get you thinking, John from Hindsight Fishing Charters posted a few videos of last year’s action…

March Port Renfrew fishing report

March 8th, 2011

No reports to pass along this week, but with the weather warming up and the winter storms subsiding, there should be more interest in Port Renfrew fishing soon.

In the meantime, here’s a photo sent in by Jody Friday of some summer fishing fun.  Jody says: “This photo is of my great nephew Kierce Nelson and my grandson Jake Walters with their big catch of the day. We love to camp at Port Renfrew and while we’re there these boys fish everyday at the mouth of Gordon River.”

Nice one, thanks Jody, and good job Kierce and Jake!  Next summer the goal is to get out onto the big water and get yourselves a salmon!  Or maybe even a halibut!

Whether little fish or big fish, those are big smiles and great memories … that’s some Port Renfrew summer fun right there.  Coming soon…

Port Renfrew fishing report

February 15th, 2011

Well…not really much of a report.  It has been too rough to fish, but the crabbing is reported to be excellent!

Here’s an experimental recipe.  It is a different taste, not for everyone.  But if you like pickled fish, then you will like this.  Thanks to SportsfishingBC forum crew for the recipe and inspiration.

Pickled Salmon

1. Fillet fresh and unfrozen salmon – deboned, skinned and chopped into equal square inch cubes or 1/4 inch strips.
2. Layer with pickling salt for 4-6 hours (no water). If salt disappears add more.
3. Rinse off twice in separate fresh water baths. Texture should be kinda hard.
4. Dry completely in paper towel till sticky and set aside in fridge.

Prepare pickling solution.  Combine the following-
1 cup water
1 cup apple cider vinegar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 level tablespoon pickling spice
Peppercorns 1/2 tsp
Slices of Fresh Garlic and Ginger
Boil 5 Minutes then cool

Layer onions, lemon slices, and salmon in jars until 2/3 full.

Pour COLD brine over fish and refrigerate for at least 5 days for flavours to develop.

January Port Renfrew update

January 31st, 2011

Still no fishing reports for Port Renfrew.   The crabbing is probably outstanding and there’s likely winter springs around, but not many people chasing them — or if there are, they aren’t talking!  Reports coming soon…

On a fishing-related note, we came across some great metal sculptures of salmon and halibut at Ron Stephens’ website www.rusticsculpture.com.  The fish are hand-cut from metal, bent and welded, then left to rust naturally under our west coast humidity.  The result is some really unique and attractive sculptures. Check out Ron’s website for more info.

Halibut meeting

January 13th, 2011

The halibut Town Hall meeting took place in Langford this evening.  Hosted by Chris Bos from the BC Sport Fishing Coalition, it was standing room only with  about 400 anglers in attendance.   That’s a great turnout, to hear about this very important issue and find out more about what anglers can do to ensure there’s recreational halibut fishing this summer.

Check out the sfibc.com website to find out more, including letter writing campaign info and other town hall locations.

Baby Molly and Hindsight Fishing Charters

January 10th, 2011

Baby Molly is a one-month old in Victoria who was diagnosed on Christmas Eve with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She and her family have been flown by emergency helicopter to B.C. Children’s Hospital where she is undergoing treatment.

Their story has captivated all of Victoria, with numerous fund raising efforts to help their family through this extraordinarily difficult time.  A Port Renfrew connection — John Wells from Hindsight Fishing Charters has donated a summer salmon and halibut charter worth $1,200 to the Baby Molly Dinner and Auction.

John said Baby Molly’s story brought a tear to his eye, and he had to do something, so he got in touch right away.   John, you’re to be commended for stepping up and doing something really really good!!!

You can donate to Baby Molly here.  Or you can attend the fundraiser dinner and auction, information below.

Date: Friday, January 28th
Time: 6:00 Cocktails
Dinner: 6:30pm
Location: Don Mee Seafood Restaurant
Address:538 Fisgard Street – Victoria, BC

Our best wishes go out to Baby Molly and to her family!

Halibut meeting in Langford

January 6th, 2011

Not much to report about fishing in Port Renfrew … John Wells from Hindsight Fishing gave it a shot this week, but didn’t find any salmon, reporting there isn’t much bait around. Ah well.

Below is a note for an important meeting about the 2011 halibut fishing season.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL SPORTS ANGLERS

The totally inadequate, biased and unfair allocation system in place for Canada’s Pacific halibut is about to create a short season disaster for local anglers.  Come on out to hear the facts at the Victoria Town Hall meeting on Wednesday 12th January 2011 at 7:00PM (In the West Shore Ballroom of the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, 829 McCallum Road, Langford – behind Costco).  Join us to find out what you can do about it.  Halibut is the concern today, but other species (salmon, groundfish, crabs and prawns) are scheduled for the same treatment by Fisheries and Oceans…. We all need to send a very strong message to the authorities immediately that this is unacceptable.

Guest speakers will outline the issue, a panel representing several segments of the public fishery will give their perspectives and there will be an open mike session, where you can ask questions and offer your comments.

Come on out and join us, bring a friend, this may be the most important contribution you make to the future of fishing for all of us.

EITHER WE STAND UP NOW
OR BE STOOD UPON FOREVER!

Merry Christmas

December 26th, 2010

Merry Christmas from FishingPortRenfrew!

No fishing reports to pass along from Port Renfrew this week, though we hear John from Hindsight Fishing Charters might be giving it a shot this week … so hopefully some fishing info coming soon.

Just for fun, below are some images of a west coast Boxing Day … the rain and wind held off for a few minutes for a nice seaside hike.  And the squall arrived just as we got back to the car.  Nice!

Happy holidays!

West Coast Art & Our Facebook Page

December 13th, 2010

Redd Evening

Not much fishing to report in Port Renfrew.  People are mostly hunkered down for winter, keeping the woodstove hot and trying to stay dry.

For the Fishing Port Renfrew website, we’ve now added a Facebook page — come check us out online, share your fishing stories and photos!

On a fun note, we came across some interesting West Coast Vancouver Island art that we thought we’d share.  Suzanne Jensen lives in East Sooke, and has an excellent eye for classic west coast images, both salmon and landscapes.  Below are some images from her portfolio website.  Send Suzanne an email to find out how you might hang one of these beauties on your wall.
